The JGR Class 78-2 was a proposed 4-8-2 Mountain-type steam locomotive intended to be operated by the Japanese Government Railways.
History[]
The Class 78-2 was designed in the 1920s but was ultimately never produced allegedly as the locomotive was too large to fit onto most turntables. The 78-2 was intended to be a three-cylinder steam locomotive although some researchers argue it was only supposed to have two cylinders, hence the "2" suffix appended. If constructed, the 78-2 would be the only known example of a 4-8-2 Mountain-type steam locomotive in use on the JGR.
