The JGR Class 7720 (originally the Karafuto Prefectural Railway Class 60) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1927 to 1945.

History

The Class 7720 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Karafuto Prefectural Railway, with a total of fifteen locomotives manufactured by Kisha Seizō and Nippon Sharyo from 1927 to 1936. These were classified as the Class 60 locomotives and numbered 60 through 74. The locomotives at first glance look very similar to that of the Class 8620 locomotives but features smaller driving wheels. The locomotives did not feature smoke deflectors at first; these were installed later.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7720 in 1943 when the Karafuto Prefectural Railway was acquired by the JGR; the locomotives were thus renumbered 7720 through 7734. The locomotives were used mainly for mixed traffic trains. The locomotives were last used in 1945 with the Soviet Union's takeover of Karafuto, with the locomotives requisitioned to the Soviet Railways; it is not clear how they were used afterwards. No Class 7720s have been preserved.
