The JGR Class 7700 (originally the Hokkaido Railway Class C1) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1903 to 1927.

History

The Class 7700 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hokkaido Railway, with a total of two locomotives manufactured at the Beyer, Peacock and Company in 1903. These were classified as the Class C1 locomotives and numbered 9 and 10.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7700 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; as there was already a Class 7700 locomotive however, the locomotives were numbered to continue on the numbering left off by the previous Class 7700s. As such, they were numbered 7712 and 7713. Despite sharing a designation, both earlier and later Class 7700s share close to nothing in common, with their only commonality being that they are both 2-6-0 tender locomotives. The last locomotives were retired in 1927, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 7700s have been preserved.
