The JGR Class 7700 (originally the JGR Class AG) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1927.
History[]
The Class 7700 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR, with a total of twelve locomotives manufactured by Beyer, Peacock and Company in 1894. These were classified as the Class AG locomotives and numbered 148 through 159. These were later reclassified as the Class E4 with their numbers unchanged.
The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7700 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 7700 through 7711. The locomotives were initially used on the Tōkaidō Line; in their later careers they were used on the Shin'etsu Line. The locomotives were all retired by 1927, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 7700s have been preserved. The later Class 7700 locomotives are not related to this locomotive.
