The JGR Class 7600 (originally the JGR Class W) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1889 to 1922.

History

The Class 7600 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR, with a total of six locomotives manufactured by Nasmyth, Wilson and Company in 1889. These were classified as the Class W locomotives and numbered 138, 140, 142, 144, 146 and 148. When the Nippon Railway became independent from the JGR, the locomotives's ownership was transferred over to the Nippon Railway and reclassified the Class Wt3/4 and renumbered 54 through 59. The locomotives were designed to cope with steeper gradients and featured side water tanks to increase their adhesion factor, similar to Kitson's Class V locomotives introduced around a similar time.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7600 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 7600 through 7605. The locomotives were initially used on the Tōhoku Line; in their later careers they were used in Manchuria for a time. The locomotives were all retired by 1922, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 7600s have been preserved.
