The JGR Class 7270 (originally the Hokkaido Government Railway Class B3 and B8) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1900 to 1935.

History

The Class 7270 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hokkaido Government Railway, with a total of four locomotives manufactured by the Brooks Locomotive Works in 1900. These were classified as the Class B3 locomotives and numbered 13 through 16. Another two locomotives imitating the style of the Class B3 locomotives were manufactured in 1906 by Kisha Seizō; these were classified the Class B8 and numbered 36 and 37.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7270 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 7270 through 7275; the two Kisha Seizō cars were actually originally numbered 7506 and 7507 due to a misunderstanding and this was quickly corrected to 7274 and 7275. The locomotives were well-liked and used all throughout Hokkaido. The locomotives were all retired by 1935, with some going to industrial railroads and other private railroads. No Class 7270s have been preserved.
