The JGR Class 7200 (originally the Hokkaido Railway Class 7) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1925 to 1954.

History

The Class 7200 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hokkaido Railway, with a total of three locomotives manufactured at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925. These were classified as the Class 7 locomotives and numbered 7 through 9.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7200 when the Hokkaido Railway was acquired by the JGR in 1943; as there was already a Class 7200 locomotive however, the locomotives were numbered to continue on the numbering left off by the previous Class 7200s. As such, they were numbered 7225 through 7227. Despite sharing a designation, both earlier and later Class 7200s share close to nothing in common, with their only commonality being that they are both 2-6-0 tender locomotives. The last locomotives were retired in 1954, with the locomotives being sold to industrial railroads where they saw brief careers until the end of the 1950s. No Class 7200s have been preserved.

These were the last steam locomotives manufactured by Baldwin to be imported into Japan.
