The JGR Class 7170 (originally the Horonai Railway Class B) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1923.

History

The Class 7170 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Horonai Railway, with two locomotives built by Baldwin Locomotive Works. These were assigned the Class B and numbered 7 through 8, following on from the Class As introduced at the time (numbered 1 through 6). When Class As 7 and 8 were built, both Class B locomotives were renumbered 9 and 10. The Horonai Railway was subsequently acquired by the Hokkaido Colliery & Railway Company.

Both locomotives were given names: 9 and 10 were given the names Dai'ichi Murata and Dai'ni Murata respectively, named after Tsutomi Murata, a president of the Horonai Railway. After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 7170 and their names dropped. The locomotives were mainly used around Hokkaido for shunting purposes before being retired in 1920. Both locomotives were then transferred to the Suttsu Railway for use as their Numbers 1 and 2 before both were involved in an accident in 1950 and scrapped. No Class 7170s have been preserved.
