The JGR Class 6600 (originally the Nippon Railway Class Bbt2/5) was a 4-4-2 Atlantic-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1925.

History

The Class 6600 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nippon Railway as the Class Bbt2/5, of which twenty-six locomotives were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. These were assigned to the Nippon Railway and given the numbers 506 to 529. The locomotives were designed to increase firegrate area compared to other locomotives. Five locomotives, 506, 508, 510, 517 and 529 were later modified with Wooten fireboxes.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 6600. The locomotives were used for fast passenger trains on the Jōban Line and other areas around the region. The last Class 6600s were retired in 1925; the introduction of superheated steam locomotives considerably reduced the service lives of the Class 6600s. Eight Class 6600 locomotives were subsequently converted into water tank cars which were used until 1952. No Class 6600s have been preserved; these remain the only 4-4-2 tender locomotives used by the JGR.
