The JGR Class 6200 and the related Class 6250, 6270, 6300 and 6350 (originally the JGR Class AN) were 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1964.

History

The Class 6200 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR as the Class AN, with multiple classes of locomotives manufactured by different manufacturers; regardless of manufacturer all were classified as the Class AN. These were later reclassified as the Class D9 locomotives. The original Class 6200 and 6270 locomotives were built by Dübs & Co and Neilson and Company, with an American copy, the Class 6300, being built by the American Locomotive Company, and a German copy, the Class 6350, being built by Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG (Hanomag).

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 6200, 6270, 6300 and 6350. Due to their age a number of them received further conversions, with others sold after their retirement from the JGR. Some Class 6200 locomotives were converted into Class 6250 locomotives, a superheated version, or Class 1070 locomotives, a tank locomotive version. Some Class 6300 locomotives were converted into Class 1150 locomotives, a tank locomotive version, while all Class 6350 locomotives were converted into Class 1000 tank locomotives and served out the rest of their lives in that form. One Class 1070 locomotive, 1080, survives today at the Kyoto Railway Museum. No original Class 6200, 6250, 6270, 6300 or 6350 locomotives have been preserved.
