The JGR Class 6150 (originally the JGR Class AM) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1928.
History[]
The Class 6150 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Sanyo Railway, with eighteen locomotives manufactured at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1897. These were classified as the Class AM locomotives and numbered 206 through 223. These were later reclassified as the Class D8 locomotives with their numbers unchanged.
The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 6150 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 6150 through 6167. The locomotives were used on the San'yō Main Line, and were essentially obsoleted with the introduction of the Class 8620 locomotives; they were then relocated to the Fukuchiyama Line and San'in and Kansai Main Lines. Retirements began in 1925 and all were retired by 1928, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 6150s have been preserved.
