The JGR Class 6120 (originally the Sanyo Railway Class 16) and the related Class 6050 (originally the Sanyo Railway Class 33) were 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1900 to 1925.

History

The Class 6120 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Sanyo Railway, with eight locomotives built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works in 1900. These were assigned the class 16 and numbered 88 to 95 and entered service the same year. One locomotive, 93, was converted into a Class 33 locomotive in 1906 at the Sanyo Railway's Hyōgo Works; this mainly involved some cylinder modifications. Despite the reclassification the locomotive's number did not change.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the unmodified locomotives were renumbered the Class 6120 and the single modified locomotive the Class 6050. 6050 was retired in 1922 and scrapped, while the remaining seven Class 6120 locomotives were converted into tank locomotives starting in 1924; conversion works were completed by 1925. No Class 6120s have been preserved.
