The JGR Class 6100 (originally the Sanyo Railway Class 17, 25 and 34) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1903 to 1923.

History

The Class 6100 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Sanyo Railway, with four locomotives manufactured at the Sanyō Railway's own Hyōgo Works in 1903. These were classified as the Class 17 locomotives and numbered 108 through 111. Another four locomotives were manufactured in 1904, classified the Class 25 and numbered 118, 119, 123 and 124. These locomotives were essentially a locally-produced copy of the Class 16 locomotives produced by the Schenectady Locomotive Works. 118 was converted into a Class 34 locomotive in 1906 with modified cylinders but its number was not changed.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 6100 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 6100 through 6107. Two locomotives were sent to Kyushu some time after. All were retired by 1923, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 6100s have been preserved.
