The JGR Class 60 (originally the Sanuki Railway Class A1, later the Sanyo Railway Class 29) was a 0-4-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1889 to 1964.

History

The Class 60 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Sanuki Railway, with three locomotives built by Hohenzollern Locomotive Works in Germany in 1889 and imported into Japan. The locomotives were assigned the Class A1 and numbered 1 to 3. The locomotives entered service the same year and were mainly used for switching duties. A total of four more locomotives were built in the years that followed; each has a slightly different appearance. While similar to the Kyushu Railway's Class 1s, the Class A1s only featured side tanks while the Class 1s featured side and well tanks. When the Sanuki Railway was absorbed by the Sanyo Railway, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 29 and renumbered 129 through 135.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 60 and were as such renumbered 60 through 66. The locomotives were retired on the JGR around 1923 and were transferred to various factories where they saw out the rest of their careers. The locomotives were retired on these factories around 1964. No Class 60s survive, although 65 was stored at JGR's Takatori Works until 1965 when it was scrapped. To date, these and the Class 45s remain the only trains purchased from the Hohenzollern Locomotive Works.
