The JGR Class 5950 (originally the Sanyo Railway Class 13) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1922.

History

The Class 5950 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Sanyo Railway, with eleven locomotives manufactured by the Rogers Locomotive Works in 1898. These were classified as the Class 13 locomotives and numbered 71 through 81. These locomotives were used to haul express passenger trains at high speeds and was of a similar size to the Class 12 locomotives also being manufactured at the same time by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the same purpose.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 5950 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 5950 through 5960. All were retired by 1922, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 5950s have been preserved.
