The JGR Class 5900 (originally the Sanyo Railway Class 12) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1932.

History

The Class 5900 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Sanyo Railway, with eighteen locomotives manufactured by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1897. These were classified as the Class 12 locomotives and numbered 53 through 70. Another ten locomotives were ordered in 1901 and numbered 96 through 105. These locomotives were used to haul express passenger trains at high speeds.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 5900 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 5900 through 5927. Retirements began in 1925 and all were retired by 1932, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 5900s have been preserved.
