The JGR Class 5830 (originally the Nippon Railway Class Dbt2/4) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1922.

History

The Class 5830 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nippon Railway, with two locomotives manufactured by Dübs & Co. in 1898. These were classified as the Class Dbt2/4 locomotives and numbered 205 and 206. The locomotives were designed to use low quality coal, such as the kind at the Jōban coalfields.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 5830 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 5830 and 5831. Both locomotives were modified in 1915 to reduce the width of their fireboxes. Both were considered surplus to requirements by 1925 and were as such retired. No Class 5830s have been preserved.
