The JGR Class 5800 (originally the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company Class Yo) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1905 to 1925.

History

The Class 5800 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company, with three locomotives manufactured by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1905. These were classified as the Class Yo locomotives and numbered 68 through 70. The locomotives were intended to be very similar to the Class L locomotives manufactured by the Schenectady Locomotive Works.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 5800 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 5800 through 5802. All were retired by 1925. No Class 5800s have been preserved.
