The JGR Class 5490 (originally the JGR Class S) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1882 to 1937.

History

The Class 5490 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was manufactured by Beyer, Peacock and Company for the Japanese Governmental Railways, of which two locomotives were manufactured in 1882. The locomotives were shipped to Japan and assembled at JGR's Shimbashi Works, initially as tank locomotives, and were subsequently tested; the locomotives were discovered to not have enough water capacity and poor braking among other issues and were promptly sent to be modified into tender locomotives.

The locomotives were given the numbers of 27 and 29; they later were renumbered 26 and 28 and named the Class S and then subsequently Class D3. The locomotives were renamed to Class 5490 with a law standardizing locomotive naming enacted in 1909. The locomotives changed hands a number of times afterwards; 5490 went to the Narita Railway in 1918 and was retired 2 years later, while 5491 went to the Tsukuba Railway and was retired in 1937. No Class 5490s have been preserved.
