The JGR Class 5200 (originally the Kyoto Railway Class 4) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1922.

History

The Class 5200 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Kyoto Railway, with two locomotives manufactured by the Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works in 1897. These were classified as the Class 4 and numbered 4 and 5 and entered service the same year, pulling mixed traffic trains. When the Sanyo Railway took over the Kyoto Railway in 1906, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 26 and numbered 119 and 120.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 5200 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 5200 and 5201. The locomotives continued to pull both mixed traffic and freight trains after their ownership was transferred to the JGR. Both were transferred to the Banshū Railway, later the Bantan Railway, in 1922; they were then renumbered 9 and 10. 9 was retired in 1934 but 10 returned under JGR ownership when the Bantan Railway was nationalized, renumbered back to 5201 and retired in 1947. No Class 5200s have been preserved.
