The JGR Class 5160 (originally the JGR Class AP) was a 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1924.
History[]
The Class 5160 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR, with twenty locomotives manufactured by the Brooks Locomotive Works from 1897 to 1898. These were classified as the Class AP and numbered 251 through 271 and were later reclassified as the Class D11. The locomotives entered service the same year, pulling freight trains.
The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 5160 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 5160 through 5179. All locomotives were retired by 1924. No Class 5160s survive, although 5176 was preserved for a time as teaching material at the Monji Railway Administration Bureau, with parts of its body sectioned to illustrate various points. The locomotive was ultimately burnt down during an air raid during the Pacific War and scrapped.
