The JGR Class 5130 (originally the JGR Class P) and the related Class 5230 (originally the Nippon Railway Class Dbt2/4) and Class 5270 (originally the Nippon Railway Class Obt2/4) were 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1877 to 1929.

History

The Class 5130 was one of the earliest steam locomotives operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR, with six locomotives manufactured by Kitson and Company in 1876 and imported into Japan in 1877. These were numbered 42, 44, 46, 48, 50 and 52 and were later reclassified as the Class P, then Class D4 and renumbered 33 through 38. A similar class of locomotives was ordered by the Nippon Railway, with Dübs & Co. handling production; twelve locomotives were ordered, built from 1882 throuhg 1885, classified the Class Dbt2/4 and numbered 4 through 15. Another class of locomotive was actually built in-house at Nippon Railway at their Ōmiya Works in 1901; one locomotive was built and classified the Class Obt2/4 and numbered 3, being the second locomotive to bear that number.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 5130 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 5130 through 5135. The other two classes, the Class Dbt2/4 and Obt2/4 were reclassified the Class 5230 and 5270 and renumbered likewise. All locomotives were retired by 1929. No Class 5130s have been preserved.
