The JGR Class 5 (originally the Hokkaido Colliery & Railway Company Class D) was a 0-4-0ST Switcher-type saddle tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1941.

History

The Class 5 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hokkaido Colliery & Railway Company, with two locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The locomotives were assigned the class D and numbered 15 and 16. The locomotives entered service in 1898 and were apparently intended to perform similarly to the JGR Class 1100 locomotives, although due to their shape they had an imbalanced axle load; this was presumably a design oversight.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 5 and renumbered 5 and 6. After being acquired by the JGR, a trailing truck was added to fix the axle load issues, making this an 0-4-2ST locomotive. The locomotives were moved around a number of times before 6 ultimately ended up on the Kanbara Factory Railway, where it was used until about 1941. No Class 5 locomotives have been preserved.
