The JGR Class 4030 (originally the Kyushu Railway Class 92) was a 0-8-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1895 to 1923.

History

The Class 4030 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was manufactured for the Chikuhō Railway, with three locomotives manufactured by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in the United States and delivered by sea in 1895; as the locomotives were being shipped to Kyushu from Kove, one of the ships sunk due to a storm, but the parts were recovered from the water and the locomotives assembled with no issue. The locomotives were given the numbers 22 through 24, and were reclassified the Class 92 when the Chikuhō Railway was acquired by the Kyushu Railway in 1906.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 4030 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 4030 through 4032. The locomotives were used to haul coal trains, but performance of the locomotives was noted to have been poor. There are accounts of these locomotives having been used as tender locomotives by connecting an auxiliary water tender to the rear. The locomotives were retired from the JGR roster in 1923, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 4030s have been preserved.
