The JGR Class 4000 (originally the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company Class O) was a 0-8-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1901 to 1929.

History

The Class 4000 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was manufactured for the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company, with four locomotives manufactured by H.K. Porter, Inc. in the United States and delivered in 1901. The locomotives were classified the Class O and initially given the temporary numbers of A and B, before receiving their final designations of 7 and A; the initial idea was to number them as 68 and 69. Locomotive A remained with the number A apparently in preparation for other locomotives with missing numbers in the future.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 4000 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 4000 and 4001. The locomotives were retired from the JGR roster in 1919 and sold to the Karafuto Prefectural Railway, who used them until 1929. No Class 4000s have been preserved.
