JGR Class 40

The JGR Class 40 (originally the Daitō Railway Class 1) was a 0-4-0T Switcher-type well tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1893 to 1926.

History[]

The Class 40 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Daitō Railway, with two locomotives built by Lokomotivfabrik Krauss & Comp. at their Sendling factory in Germany in 1893 and imported into Japan. The locomotives were assigned the Class 1 and numbered 1 and 2. The locomotives entered service the same year and were used for switching services. The Chūbu Railway took over one of the locomotives and changed hands a number of times.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 40 although they did not receive new numbers. A third locomotive was built in 1911, also by Krauss. The locomotives were moved around a number of private railroads a number of times further until the last locomotive was retired in 1926. No Class 40s have been preserved.

These were the smallest 1,067 mm gauge steam locomotives operated by the JGR.
The Class 40s had long had misinformation attributed to it, mainly due to most records pertaining to the railway having been destroyed during the Great Kanto Earthquake. Due to its appearance it is often confused for a locomotive manufactured by Orenstein & Koppel. The Daitō Railway did order a steam locomotive from O&K, although it never arrived. Another point of confusion is that when operating on the Sano Railway the trains featured the large headlight from the Daitō era, further confusing others.
