The JGR Class 3700 (originally the Sanyo Railway Class 35) was a 2-6-4T Adriatic-type side tank Vauclain compound steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1907 to 1925.

History

The Class 3700 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Sanyo Railway and manufactured from 1907 through 1909 at their own Hyōgo Works; a total of six locomotives were manufactured. The locomotives were heavily based on the Class 32 locomotives also used by the Sanyo Railway. These were the last ever locomotives to be manufactured for the Sanyo Railway as the company had been acquired by the JGR in 1906.

The locomotives were reclassified the Class 3700 after a rule was introduced to standardize locomotive classifications; the locomotives were numbered 3700 through 3705. After their acquisition the Class 3700 locomotives were used in Osaka; the locomotives were retired from JGR service in 1925 along with other Vauclain compound locomotives in service at the time and scrapped in a rice field. One locomotive, 3705, was bought by the Gokaichi Railway and used until 1940 when the Gokaichi Railway was merged with the Nambu Railway. The locomotive was renumbered 10 and used until 1944 when it was reacquired by the JGR, but subsequently saw little use afterwards and was officially retired in 1948. No Class 3700s have been preserved.
