The JGR Class 3400 (originally the Nankai Railway Class 1) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1896 to 1949.
History[]
The Class 3400 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was manufactured initially for the Nankai and Bantan Railway, with six locomotives manufactured by the Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works and delivered in 1896. These were classified as the Class 1. A total of fifteen more locomotives were manufactured for the Toyosu and Yokohama Railway in 1897 and 1907 by Brooks Locomotive Works and then by the American Locomotive Company as both Pittsburgh and Brooks had been absorbed into ALCO. The locomotives in this form changed ownership a number of times.
When a rule was enacted to standardize locomotive naming conventions in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 3400 and renumbered to 3400 through 3420; two of the Nankai locomotives were not reclassified. The last locomotives were retired starting 1934, with many sold to private railroads. The last locomotive was retired by 1949. No Class 3400s have been preserved.
