The JGR Class 3250 (originally the Nippon Railway Class B3/5) and the related Class 3390 (originally the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company Class M) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1903 to 1950.

History

The Class 3250 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Ryōmo Railway, with five locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and delivered to the railroad in 1893; the locomotives were initially numbered 1 through 5. When the Ryōmo Railway was taken over by the Nippon Railway, the locomotives assumed Nippon Railway ownership. The locomotives were reclassified the Class B3/5 and numbered 501 through 505. 504 was then transferred to the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company, classified the Class M and renumbered 58 in 1901. The same year, two more Class M locomotives were built by Baldwin and delivered to the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company and numbered following on from 58.

After a rule regarding standardizing locomotive designations in 1909, the four Nippon Railway locomotives were classified the Class 3250 and the three Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company locomotives were classified the Class 3390; these were numbered 3250 through 3253 and 3390 through 3392 respectively. After the locomotives were acquired by the JGR they were mainly used for shunting. All locomotives were retired on the JGR by 1918, with some sent to private railroads and some to industrial railroads. The last locomotives were retired on these railroads by 1950. No Class 3250s have been preserved.
