The JGR Class 3240 (originally the Nippon Railway Class HS3/5) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank Von Borries compound steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1904 to 1922.

History

The Class 3240 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nippon Railway, with two locomotives built by Henschel & Son in Germany and delivered to the railroad in 1904; the locomotives were classified the Class HS3/5 and numbered 831 and 832. The locomotive featured a Von Borries compound cylinder design and were the first Henschel locomotives in Japan.

The locomotives were reclassified the Class 3240 after the Nippon Railway was nationalized in 1909. After the locomotives were acquired by the JGR the locomotives were used mainly around the Jōban coal field. The locomotives were not well liked due to their Von Borries compounding system and were difficult to maintain and all were retired by 1922. No Class 3240s have been preserved.
