The JGR Class 3200 (originally the Nippon Railway Class P3/5) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1903 to 1950.

History

The Class 3200 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nippon Railway, with twenty locomotives built by Beyer, Peacock and Company in the United Kingdom and delivered to the railroad in 1903; the locomotives were classified the Class P3/5 and numbered 801 though 824. The original plan for the railroad was to order twelve cars from Beyer and twelve from Neilson and Company; this did not come to pass as Neilson was not able to accept the offer unless they manufactured all 24 locomotives and that the Beyer locomotives had better fuel efficiency, hence all locomotives were ultimately manufactured by Beyer.

The locomotives were reclassified the Class 3200 after the Nippon Railway was nationalized in 1909. After the locomotives were acquired by the JGR the locomotives had a long service life and were mainly located in Utsunomiya, Morioka and Fukushima. The first retirements began in 1929 and all locomotives were retired by 1935, with some locomotives being reactivated for use during the 1940s during World War II. No Class 3200s have been preserved.
