The JGR Class 3170 (originally the Nippon Railway Class H3/5) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1903 to 1951.

History

The Class 3170 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nippon Railway, with six locomotives built by Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG, better known as Hanomag, in Germany and delivered to the railroad in 1903; the locomotives were classified the Class H3/5 and numbered 825 though 830. When introduced the locomotives were the largest tank locomotives in Japan at the time.

The locomotives were reclassified the Class 3170 after the Nippon Railway was nationalized in 1909. After the locomotive was acquired by the JGR the locomotives had a long service life. The first retirements began in 1948 and all locomotives were retired by 1950. 3170 was then transferred to Takasaki Sanko but was not used and scrapped shortly after. No Class 3170s have been preserved.
