The JGR Class 3100 (originally the Kyushu Railway Class 228) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1906 to 1949.

History

The Class 3100 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Kyushu Railway, with five locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company in Germany and delivered to the railroad in 1906; these were classified the Class 228 and numbered 228 through 251. The locomotives were noted for their imposing size.

The locomotives were reclassified the Class 3100 and renumbered 3100 through 3123 after the establishment of a rule to standardize locomotive naming in 1909. The locomotives were mostly used to haul coal trains; the first locomotives were retired by 1933 and all were retired by 1949. No Class 3100s survive and the locomotives are often considered a failure. The locomotives on the Karafuto Prefectural Railway also classified 3100 at one point are not related to this locomotive.
