The JGR Class 3085 (originally the Kokura Railway Class 6) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type well tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1914 to 1948.

History

The Class 3085 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Kokura Railway, with five locomotives built by Henschel & Son in Germany and delivered to the railroad in 1914; these were classified the Class 6 and numbered 6 through 10.

When the Kokura Railway was acquired by the JGR in 1943, the locomotives were reclassified the Class 3085 and renumbered 3085 through 3089. Some of the locomotives were moved to Tokyo. After retirement on the JGR, two locomotives, 3088 and 3089 were sent to the Mitsubishi Chemical Plant where they were used until the 1950s. No Class 3085s survive; this locomotive was theorized to have been the inspiration behind the design of the Class 3040 locomotive.
