The JGR Class 3070 (originally the Ashio Railway Class 2) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1911 to 1950.

History

The Class 3070 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Ashio Railway, with four locomotives built by Kisha Seizō and delivered to the railroad in 1911; these were classified the Class 2 and numbered 2 through 5. Two more locomotives were delivered in 1913 and continued on the numbering.

When some locomotives from the Ashio Railway were rented to the JGR, two of the Class 2s, 6 and 7, were given the classification of Class 3070 and numbered 3070 and 3071. The remaining locomotives on the railroad, 2 through 5, were initially classified differently as the Class 3025 due to slightly different configurations of smoke tubes, but were eventually lumped together with the Class 3070s and numbered 3073 through 3075. Each of the locomotives were moved to various locations around Japan, though most went to Hama-Kawasaki. The locomotives were retired from JGR service in 1950, with two locomotives sent to industrial railroads where they were used until the 1960s. No Class 3070s have been preserved.
