The JGR Class 3040 (originally the Hikami Railway Class C3) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1933 to 1942.

History

The Class 3040 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hikami Railway for use on their Kisuki line, with one locomotive built by Nippon Sharyo. The locomotive was assigned the number 2. The locomotive entered service in 1933 but was subsequently transferred to the JGR after the Hikami Railway's nationalization in August 1934 and allocated the Kiji branch. The locomotive was the second longest tank locomotive used by the JGR after the Class E10 which would be introduced later.

After nationalization, the locomotive was reclassified the Class 3040. The locomotive was later used around Maizuru for shunting but was then sent to Hainan Island in 1942 for shunting services; the locomotive's subsequent fate is unclear although it was likely scrapped.
