The JGR Class 2950 (originally the Iiyama Railway Class 11) and the related Class 2830 (originally the Onoda Railway Class 101) are 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1923 to 1949.
History[]
The Class 2950 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Iiyama Railway, with four locomotives built by Hitachi and delivered to the railroad in 1923; these were classified the Class 11 and numbered 11 through 14. Two more locomotives were ordered by the railroad in 1928 and were numbered following on from the previous locomotives, going 15 and 16. Five more derivatives were manufactured in 1929 and 1931; four were manufactured by Hitachi while one, E102 for the Sangi Railway, was manufactured by Kisha Seizō.
When the Iiyama Railway was acquired by the JGR in 1944, the Class 11 locomotives were reclassified as the Class 2950 and renumbered 2950 through 2955; one of the derivatives, the Onoda Railway's Class 101 locomotives, was reclassified the Class 2930, with the two locomotives there renumbered 2930 and 2931. The locomotives were only used around Iiyama throughout their duration of service, but one, 2956, was then moved to Takamatsu. All Class 2950s were retired by 1949. One of the derivatives, Sangi Railway E102, survives today. It is located in the vicinity of Nishi-Fujiwara Station on the Sangi Railway Line.
