The JGR Class 2940 (originally the Karafuto Prefectural Railway Class 2) was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1919 to 1945.

History

The Class 2940 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Karafuto Prefectural Railway, with seven locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company and delivered to the railroad in 1919; these were classified the Class 2 and numbered 2 through 8. The locomotives were renamed the Class 3100 in 1922, on the basis that there was another locomotive with the same wheel arrangement in use on the railroad and as such it made sense to rename it as such to be the next locomotive in the numbering system. The locomotives were thus renumbered 3100 through 3106 in accordance with the new classification. The locomotives were noted to resemble Baldwin locomotives despite having been made by ALCO.

When the Karafuto Prefectural Railway was acquired by the JGR in 1944, the Class 3100 locomotives were reclassified as the Class 2940 and renumbered 2940 through 2946. The locomotives were requisitioned by the Soviet Union after their takeover of Karafuto and in 1945 and their JGR service lives ended there; it is not clear what happened to them on the Soviet Railways. No Class 2940s have been preserved. The Class 3100 locomotives used on mainland Japan around the same time are not related to this locomotive.
