The JGR Class 2900 was a 2-6-2T Prairie-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1912 to 1948.

History

The Class 2900 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was a modification of various JGR Class 2100 locomotives. A total of seventeen locomotives were modified at JGR's Takatori and Yokkaichi Works. Some locomotives have minor differences from each other.

The locomotives were largely used around the Kansai region. The locomotives changed hands a number of times within the JGR, being transferred to the Moji and Nagoya Bureaus. One locomotive, 2916, was sold to the Kokura Railway in 1934 but was reacquired by the JGR when the Kokura Railway itself was acquired by the JGR. The locomotives were retired by 1950. No Class 2900s have been preserved.
