The JGR Class 2850 (originally the Hankaku Railway Class A5) is a 2-6-0T Mogul-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1965.

History

The Class 2850 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Iga Railway (predecessor of the current Iga Railway), with three locomotives built by the Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works. The three locomotives were intended to be used on the Iga Railway, but as the railway never opened the trains were transferred to the Hankaku Railway and Bisai Railway and assigned to be the Class A5 and Class Otsu respectively. This was one of only three 2-6-0 tank locomotives in Japan, alongside the JGR Class 2800 and 2820; while the wheel arrangement as a whole was common 2-6-0 tank locomotives were unpopular due to poor coal and water capacity and inability to extend the size of the tank due to a lack of trailing wheel.

Despite the locomotives being manufactured by Pittsburgh, the locomotives actually had more in common with that of Brooks locomotives than they did Pittsburgh. As a result, the locomotives had an imposing appearance and were larger than most locomotives of its type. After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 2850. The locomotives were retired on the JGR in 1923 and changed hands a few times before the last locomotive was retired in 1965 on the Jōbu Railway (owned by Seibu Railway). One locomotive, 2851 (ex-Hankaku Railway 13), in its guise as Jōbu Railway 7, is preserved; it is located at Higashi-Shinagawa Park in Shinagawa, Tokyo, located near Shimbamba Station on the Keikyu Main Line. The locomotive is on permanent public display and is likely the only ex-Hankaku Railway steam locomotive left in existence.

A similar type of locomotive was manufactured by the Taiwan Railways Administration, named the Class 100. One locomotive was manufactured where it was used until 1975 and subsequently scrapped.
