The JGR Class 2820 (originally the Kyushu Railway Class 102) was a 2-6-0T Mogul-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1949.

History

The Class 2820 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Kyushu Railway, with twelve locomotives built by the Brooks Locomotive Works and delivered to the railroad in 1898; these were classified the Class 102 and numbered 102 through 113. This was one of only three 2-6-0 tank locomotives in Japan, alongside the JGR Class 2800 and 2850; while the wheel arrangement as a whole was common 2-6-0 tank locomotives were unpopular due to poor coal and water capacity and inability to extend the size of the tank due to a lack of trailing wheel.

When the Kyushu Railway was nationalized in 1909, the Class 102 locomotives were reclassified as the Class 2820 and renumbered 2820 through 2831. The locomotives were only used around Nōgata throughout its duration of service. All Class 2820s were retired by 1925, with none sold to private railroads; it is speculated that the locomotives's poor weight balance was a factor in this decision. No Class 2820s have been preserved.
