The JGR Class 2800 (originally the Kansai Railway Class 98) was a 2-6-0T Mogul-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1949.

History

The Class 2800 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nara Railway, with three locomotives built by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works and delivered to the railroad in 1897; these were numbered 6 through 8. An additional four locomotives were delivered in 1899 and continued on the numbering from 9 through 12. When the Nara Railway was absorbed by the Kansai Railway the locomotives fell under their ownership. They were reclassified as the Class 98, nicknamed Mikasa and numbered 98 through 104. This was one of only three 2-6-0 tank locomotives in Japan, alongside the JGR Class 2820 and 2850; while the wheel arrangement as a whole was common 2-6-0 tank locomotives were unpopular due to poor coal and water capacity and inability to extend the size of the tank due to a lack of trailing wheel.

When the Kansai Railway was nationalized in 1909, the Class 98 locomotives were reclassified as the Class 2800 and renumbered 2800 through 2806. Retirements of the locomotives began in 1937 on the JGR and a number were transferred to private railroads. The last locomotives on the JGR were then sent to industrial railroads with all retired by 1949. No Class 2800s have been preserved.
