The JGR Class 2700 was a 0-6-4T side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1912 to 1960.
History[]
The Class 2700 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was a modification of various JGR Class 2100 locomotives. A total of twenty four locomotives were modified at JGR's Hamamatsu, Nagano and Shimbashi Works; these locomotives were split into three batches and have minor differences from each other.
The locomotives were largely used around the Chūbu, Chūgoku and Kinki regions. The locomotives changed hands a number of times within the JGR, being transferred to the Sapporo, Tokyo and Aomori Railway Bureaus. On the JGR the locomotives were retired prior to the 1950s, with only one locomotive, 2719, sold to the private sector in 1950. The locomotive was finally retired in 1960. No Class 2700s have been preserved. This is the only known example of an 0-6-4 locomotive in Japan.
