The JGR Class 2700 (originally the Hokuetsu Railway Class D) was a 0-6-2T Webb-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1931. This article will also detail the Class 3040, an improved rebuild of the Class 2700 locomotives with a 2-6-2T wheel arrangement.

History

The Class 2700 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Boso Railway, with two locomotives built by the Cooke Locomotive and Machine Works. These were assigned the numbers 6 and 7. They were subsequently transferred to the Hokuetsu Railway in 1899 and classified the Class D.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 2700. Both locomotives were then modified with a Bissel-type front truck from 1911 to 1912, and thus renumbered the Class 3040 series. Both locomotives changed hands a number of times before they were finally retired around 1931. No Class 3040s have been preserved. The later Class 2700 and 3040 locomotives are not related to this train.

These are the only trains purchased by the JGR from the Cooke Locomotive and Machine Works.
