JGR Class 210

The JGR Class 210 (originally the Tokushima Railway Class Kō 1) was a 2-4-2T Columbian-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1952.

History[]

The Class 210 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Tokushima Railway, with three locomotives constructed by the Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works in the United States and imported into Japan in 1898. The locomotives were classified as the Class Kō 1 and numbered 1 through 3 on the Tokushima Railway.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 210. The locomotives were retired from JGR service in 1915, with 210 and 211 going to the Mine Light Railway and 212 to the Onoda Railway. When the Mine Light Railway was itself nationalized in 1920, both 210 and 211 were transferred to the Onoda Railway, making all three locomotives in service on the same railroad, albeit only briefly. 212 was then transferred to the Ube Railway, 210 the Sangi Railway while 211 remained on the Onoda Railway. In their later careers the locomotives were used for industrial use, with 210 being used by Nippon Soda and 211 at the Asano Shipyard & Machinery Works; 212 had been scrapped prior. 210 later found use on the Onahama Rinkai Railway where it was renumbered B271 and then retired in 1952. No Class 210s have been preserved.
