JGR Class 2000

The JGR Class 2000 (originally the Iwakoshi Railway Class Kō 2) was a 0-6-0T side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1905 to July 1918.

History[]

The history of what would ultimately become the Class 2000 can be traced back to the Fifth National Industrial Exhibition in Osaka in 1903, where a J.A. Maffei 0-4-4-0 Mallet locomotive would be shown off to the public, with the locomotive later purchased by the Nippon Railway and numbered 701 after test runs following the conclusion of the exposition. Noting their suitability for steeply-graded lines, two other railways, the Hokkaido Railway and Iwakoshi Railway, also showed interest in acquiring a Mallet locomotive for they too had steep grades. The Hokkaido Railway would take delivery of a similar locomotive to 701 in 1905, numbering it 11; owing to budgetary constraints the Iwakoshi Raiway would not purchase a Mallet locomotive, instead opting for a tank locomotive also built by Maffei with the same basic design.

This locomotive was also delivered in 1905, with the Iwakoshi Railway classifying it as the Class Kō 2 and numbering it 6. The Iwakoshi Railway would be nationalized in 1906, coming under the jurisdiction of the JGR; 6 would then be assigned to Wakamatsu Depot. 6 was reclassified in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted, being renumbered 2000 and reclassified accordingly. Apart from mainly being used to scale the Bandai Pass (now part of the Ban'etsu West Line), 2000 was found to be too heavy for many of the main lines around the region and mostly found work performing switching duties at Ōi and Hamamatsu Works. 2000 was withdrawn from service and scrapped on 11 July 1918.
