The JGR Class 1765 and the related Class 1770 (originally the Tsurumi Rinko Railway Class 303 and 304) were 0-6-0T Switcher-type side tank steam locomotives operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1929 to 1952.

History

The Class 1765 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Tsurumi Rinko Railway, with one locomotive built by Kawasaki Sharyō in 1929. The locomotive was numbered 303 and subsequently put into service. A similar locomotive was ordered in 1938, numbered 304 and put into service the same year. Some ten additional locomotives were built for the Yawata Steel Works in 1929, 1935 and 1943.

When the Kyushu Railway was nationalized in 1943, the Class 303 and 304 locomotives were reclassified as the Class 1765 and Class 1770 locomotives and renumbered as such. The locomotives were retired by 1952, although the locomotives on the Yahata Steel Works were likely used until the 1960s. No Class 1765s have been preserved.
