The JGR Class 1760 (originally the Echigo Railway Class 20) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side well tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1926 to 1950.

History

The Class 1760 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. A total of two locomotives were ordered from Nippon Sharyo by the Nansatsu Railway (now Kagoshima Kōtsū) and the Satsunan Chūō Railway; these were numbered 4 and 1 respectively. What would eventually become the Class 1760 was a single locomotive ordered by the Echigo Railway. The locomotive was delivered in 1927 to the railway. The locomotive was intended to be designated the Class 20 and numbered as such by the Echigo Railway, but by the time the locomotive arrived the Echigo Railway had already been nationalized and the locomotive as such fell under JGR ownership and numbering.

Two more locomotives were then ordered: one in 1930 for Denka and one in 1944 for the Kumanobu Railway. The locomotive was then used for shunting around the Echigo area before being retired in 1940 and scrapped. The remaining locomotives on private railroads were used until the late 1950s. One Class 1760 locomotive, Kagoshima Kōtsū 4, is preserved. It is located at the Kagoshima Kōtsū sales office in Kagoshima, Japan.
