The JGR Class 1720 (originally the Echigo Railway Class 18) was a 0-6-0T Switcher-type side well tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1925 to 1950.

History

The Class 1720 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Echigo Railway, with two locomotives built by Nippon Sharyo in 1925 and delivered the same year. The locomotives were assigned the Class 18 and numbered 18 and 19.

After the Echigo Railway was nationalized in 1927, the locomotives was reclassified the Class 1720 and renumbered 1720 and 1721. The locomotives were then used for shunting around the Echigo area before being transferred to the Tsuruga and Inazawa areas. The locomotives were retired from JGR service in 1950, with one locomotive (number unclear) being transferred to Shin'etsu Chemicals for use. No Class 1720s have been preserved.
