The JGR Class 170 (originally the Akita Railway Class 4.2) was a 2-4-0T Porter-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1903 to the 1950s.

History

The Class 170 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nishinari Railway, with two locomotives built by Kisha Seizō in Japan in 1903. The locomotives were assigned the numbers 1 and 3, and were the third and second locomotives to carry those numbers on the Nishinari Railway at the time. The locomotives were allegedly built by taking over two unfinished locomotives intended for the Tokushima Railway; it is speculated that the trains feature very similar, if not identical, wheelbase, cylinder size and wheel diameter. The locomotives were then transferred to the Akita Railway.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were reclassified as the Class 170. The locomotives were moved around a number of private railroads a number of times further, with 170 being moved to the Hakuhō Railway and renumbered 2 while 171 was reclassified as the Class 115; 171 was used on the Umebachi Iron Works afterwards and used until the 1950s and 170, now 2, was used until about 1949. No Class 170s have been preserved.
